How well do you feel you completed the requirements of the week’s assignments?
Mashups and remixes proved to a fun assignment for the past couple of weeks. I feel that I finished each assignment to completion and to the best of my abilities. They all seemed to turn out quite nicely.
What gave you trouble? What did you enjoy most? What did you learn?
The only thing that gave me trouble was reducing the noise of the instruments in the song “Any Way You Want It,” but that turned out to be an easy fix once I found the effect “Noise Reduction.”
I really enjoyed creating the emo magazine, I couldn’t stop laughing as I came up with ideas for it. I also enjoyed mashing up Jurassic Park with The Great Gatsby because it was such a random and odd match.
I learned quite a lot this week. I learned that Walt Disney is a hypocrite, I learned that Led Zeppelin are kind of ripoffs and that there is no clear definition of remixing or its legal use.
What would you do differently? What questions to you have?
If I could have done one thing differently it would have been to attempt a video mashup but they just seemed too intimidating to me.
What happens if YouTube does decide one of my videos violates copyright laws and they delete before professor is able to view it? Will that be considered an incomplete assignment?
What are some of the larger issues surrounding your work? Cultural/Societal implications?
Copyright and Fair Use laws are seem a lot more complicated than I originally thought. I always assumed that when someone has copyrighted material, ALL of it is theirs and it seemed unfair for another person to come along and use it. But after watching the documentary “A Remix Manifesto,” I realize that taking material and changing it to make your own is perfectly justified. It’s no longer even that person’s work anymore once someone changes it.
Our culture as well as the businessmen of the world, need to stop worrying about sucking out as much money as possible from a piece of work and be more concerned about the exchange of ideas, imagination, and creativity. If we become more concerned about that and not copyright infringement than improvements and progress in technology and the arts will occur.
Here are the three mashup assignments I did that are 11.5 stars total. Two are use audio mashups while another one is visual.
